native Americans in new Mexico
New Mexico Natives
Modern day native Americans still celebrate
the same traditions as they did 1000s of years ago. They simply dress and act
like normal people. New Mexico is one of the little places in the world where
you can celebrate their traditions with them.
Back then
Around the 13 or 1400s the natives came
from Mexico to take advantage of the good farming and recourses of New Mexico. They
grew and prospered celebrating religion and their ancestors. Then in the 1500s Spanish
missionaries came and introduced roman catholic religion and converted many. But
instead of a schism (which is the separation of a church) they became
interwoven with the Indian beliefs.
Now
Now there are about 23 tribes still
celebrating and worshipping the way they did 1000 years ago. You can even go
visit them and join the celebration. Today they have their own way and govt.
they have their own laws and accustoms to fallow. If you want to visit their historic
sites, I recommend the cave dwellings. The natives dug out small caves in sand
stone and used them as houses, truly a place worth visiting.
