the trail of tears
The Trail of Tears
In 1830 the southern native Americans lived at
peace. With little war and contention their cutler and people were thriving.
But in just one year all would change. This tragic story would later be known
as, The Trail of Tears.
In 1831 Andrew Jackson’s Indian Removal
Act gave the us the “right” to remove all native Americans living in the south
eastern states, they would be forced to migrate all the way to the west side of
the Mississippi river on foot. Their land was rich and had many resources
that’s why US government saw this as an opportunity to attempt a new state to
expand the growing US. Some Indians excepted defeat but a fraction would rather
fight, so a war broke out. The natives were out number 10 to 1 so they lost
quickly. So the remaining started a journey that would last 46 years.
On the trail they suffered sicknesses like
a deadly cough to measles. Over 4000 people died out of the 100000 native
Americans in total. They had to walk 2200 miles on foot pulling wagons all the
way. When they arrived in 1877 they were wary and starved. Some had even been
born on the trail! The Rocky Mountains were no easy place to start a new life
but compared to the trail, it we paradise.
This was not the brightest
decision by the US government but we still remember it to this day. Together we
can and have already learned from this terrible mistake and it will never
happen again.
