John Smith By Graham LaBass (prepositional phrases)

                                     John Smith

History has its celebrities; George Washington, the WWII ace Eddie Rickenbacker, and many more. (Many question whether some people deserve to be a part of history).  Most people deserve to be a part of history, but many question whether what they did is worthy enough. Without question John Smith is a big part of US history. So what did he do to be worthy?

                                                His life

John Smith was born in Lincolnshire, UK. He was born in 1580. (It is not known the condition in which he was born but his father was a merchant’s apprentice). His father was a merchant’s apprentice but other than that the condition he was born in is unknown. At a young age John Smith decided to join the life of combat. He fought in the English army as a soldier for hire. He was seen as a very successful solder. This is what made him decide to join a brigade against the Turkish in Hungary. During a mission he was captured and brought to Istanbul. There he served a kind lady. She being a caring lady, did not want him to be a slave any more. She sent him to another place for work. There he was treated terribly. He was forced to do farm work and labor. Finally by a streak of luck he killed his master and escaped back to England in the 1600s. There he joined the colonists set out to form Jamestown. Later in 1806 he died a hero.

                                   What he is known for.

(John Smith found himself with young and wealthy gold seekers, back when companies were making colonies). Back when colonies were being made by companies, John Smith found himself with young and wealthy gold seekers. They were given a mission to form a colony called Jamestown in the “New World”. Most of the colonist were only interested in the gold found with the Aztecs. This need for gold made them completely ignorant to the fact the they had no food or water to survive the winter. They ended up steeling from the native Americans to survive. But in doing so John Smith was captured by the natives. There he would have been put to death if it weren’t for Pocahontas. Even with the food stolen from the natives, the colonists had no preserves. Family’s had to resort to eating vermin or even each other. When the winter ended John Smith had enough. He took charge and said, “Those who won’t work, won’t eat.” This made him very unpopular among the colonists but when winter rolled around they had food and water.

                                      Conclusion

(Because of John Smith’s bravery he saved Jamestown). James town was saved because of John Smiths bravery. This should tell us not to be blinded by the shine of gold, but to drive to make something important shine. Today Jamestown is a thriving city. That is why he deserves to be in the pages of history.
